Servant: Assassin (Fate/Zero,Fate/Stay Night)
Real Identity: Hassan-i Sabbah

"They call him Shaykh-al-Hashishim. He is their Elder, and upon his command all of the men of the mountain come out or go in...
they are believers of the word of their elder and everyone everywhere fears them, because they even kill kings."
- Benjamin of Tudela

Hassan-I Sabbah was a charismatic leader, a brilliant mathematician, devoted religious scholar, a diabolical mastermind and founder of The Hashashin also known as The Assassins.

Hassan-I Sabbah was born in the city of Qom in Persia in 1050. In his early life, his family moved to the city of Ray, where Hassan developed an interest in metaphysical matters, and adhered to the Twelver code of instruction. Later, he mastered palmistry, languages, philosophy, astronomy and mathematics (namely geometry). Amira Darrab, a comrade of Hassan, introduced him to Ismā'īlī doctrine. Initially, he was unimpressed; however, after several arguments with Darrab, his respect grew, and he began to see merit in converting.

At the age of 17, Hassan swore allegiance to the Fatimid Caliphate in Cairo. During his studies, a chief missionary of the area, Abdu I-Malik ibn Attash, became suitably impressed with him, and made him Deputy Missionary. In addition, Attash suggested that Hassan move to Cairo for further studies. Beginning his journey to Cairo in 1076, he was hosted by some members of the Fatimid caliphate, as well as a man who was once his mentor; Resi Abufasl. Upon meeting with him again, Abufasl decided to instruct Hassan further.

In Cairo, he upset Badr al-Jamali, the chief of the Caliphate's army, resulting in Hassan being arrested. Once out of jail, Hassan devoted his entirety to his mission of spreading the Ismā'īlī. With an unstoppable zeal, his actions led to widespread conversion to Ismā'īlī among the people in the Alborz mountains. He also orchestrated the siege and capture of the fort at Alamut in 1090. With Alamut his, it is said that he devoted his entire time there - 35 years - to intensive study, only ever leaving his quarters twice. From his base in Alamut, he also founded the Hashshashin or Assassins, a group tasked with protecting from attackers outside of Iran. The group is also known as the Fedayin, meaning 'The Martyrs' or 'Men Who Accept Death'.

Servant Historical Background Part 5

Servant: Caster (Fate/Zero)
Real Identity: Gilles de Rais

Born in 1404 at the Castle of Machecoul, France, Gilles de Rais was a Breton Knight, Marshal of France and companion of the famous female heroine, Joan of Arc.

Gilles’ early years were of a noble, as he was born into a rich family. He was a very intelligent student and by the age of 7 he started learning classical arts, Latin and Greek. He also trained in martial arts and took Humanity studies. However, his childhood was a troubled one. His father died when Gilles was 9, and his mother died 2 years later, so Gilles and his brother Rene were sent to live with their grandfather Jean de Craon.

At that period Charles VI was the King of France. He disinherited his son Charles VII and made Henry V his future successor; this in order to sign a peace treaty with England, an act that neither the French nor Charles VII liked. Jean de Craon and Gilles de Rais were supporters of Charles VII, so when he took the throne, he sent Joan of Arc along with Gilles de Rais to set free Orlean, which was under siege. When they succeeded, Gilles de Rais became Marshal of France, thanks to his good reputation. This gave him the ability to crown Charles VII, King of France.

Gilles’ career ended after the death of his father, Jean de Craon. He decided to retire and live a boring life back at his castles. In the following years Gilles, according to his confession, started sexually harassing and murdering young boys. He was carrying them away to one of his castles, where he hung them with a rope then proceeded to rape them and cut their head at end. The murders had reached the number of 200. The investigators of the murders found evidence that was connecting Gilles with the crimes, which he firstly denied, but after his conviction, confessed. Gilles was executed for his murders in 1440 at the age of 36.

Servant Historical Background Part 4

Servant: Rider (Fate/Zero)
Real Identity: Iskander/Alexander the Great

Alexander the Great was the son of King Philip II of Macedon. He was tutored by the Greek philosopher Aristotle until the age of 16.

When Philip died in 336 BCE, he had managed to complete the goal of the conquest of Greece. This left the task of conquering Persia to his son, Alexander. At the age of 20, Alexander succeeded Philip as ruler of an expanding empire. At his disposal was an experienced army and generalship of Greece, and by using his authority, set into action his father's military plans. Assembling an army of 48,000 well-equipped, high-spirited, veteran warriors, he invaded the Persian-held Asia-Minor in 334 BCE.

By 333 BCE, Alexander had managed to conquer Ionia and Anatolia (Turkey); by 332, Syria, Palestine, and Egypt fell; and by 331 BCE he managed to take control of Mesopotamia, and prepared for the invasion of the Persian homeland. By 331 he took Pasargadae and burned the palace at Persepolis, and by 330 BCE, established himself as the new emperor of Persia.

Alexander had even bigger ambitions; seeking to find the "ends of the world and the Great Outer Sea (Oceanus)", he marched his army into India and across the Indus River, proceeding into the Punjab. While he managed to subject the local rulers there, he discontinued his campaign due to the refusal to continue from his remaining forces. Alexander's conquests had finally come to an end.

By 324 BCE, Alexander and his army had returned to Susa in Mesopotamia, where they celebrated their victories through almost nonstop feasting. By this time, Alexander's empire was the largest the world had ever seen. The Conqueror himself busied himself with plans of governance and future exploration. However, in June of 323 BCE, he suddenly fell ill, and died at the age of 33.

Even though Alexander had died a young man, he had had a meteoric career. He had proven himself to be a brilliant strategist and inspiring leader. Alexander had also created the largest empire the world had ever seen by that time. In addition, he had established numerous cities in the lands he conquered, and reportedly named about 70 of them Alexandria in his own honor. More importantly, however, his conquests had linked the cultures of far fledged societies, and started what historians refer to as the "Hellenistic Era."

Servant Historical Background Part 3

Servant : Archer (Fate/Zero)
Real Identity : Gilgamesh

Gilgamesh, known in the Fate Universe as "The King of Heroes", is the fifth king of the Sumerian city Uruk. His reign took place around 2500 BC, and lasted for 126 years according to the Sumerian king list. He was the son of Lugalbanda and the goddess Ninsun. Due to his mother, Gilgamesh was considered as a two third god and one third man. His life is detailed in the fullest extent in the greatest surviving work of early Mesopotamian literature, The Epic of Gilgamesh.

In the Epic, the king accomplished the construction of the great wall of Uruk, thanks to the conscription (forced labor) of his citizens. His subjects, exhausted by his oppression, began to groan and complain. These words reached the gods themselves, who then sent Enkidu to defeat him. He was as strong and magnificent as Gilgamesh himself. After some events, they became great friends, and Gilgamesh considered Enkidu as his only equal. The pair then embark on a series of journeys, effectively saving Gilgamesh's people from his oppression. In one such adventure, they decided to journey into the a forest forbidden to mortals to steal cedar trees. In the process, they kill the forest's guardian, Humbaba.

When they return to Uruk, Ishtar, the goddess of love, becomes enthralled with Gilgamesh. He refuses her, however, and she becomes enraged to the point that she asks her father, Anu, to punish him by unleashing the Bull of Heaven. Gilgamesh and Enkidu manage to kill the beast, but at an unexpected price; the gods decide to kill one of the two. Since Gilgamesh is two-parts god, they choose to sentence Enkidu to death by cursing him.

Gilgamesh heart was destroyed by Enkidu’s death, and he begins to fear the prospect of his own demise. He decides to abandon his kingship and pursue the secret of eternal life by searching for Utnapishtim, the only mortal to ever achieve immortality. After a long and treacherous journey, he reaches Utnapishtim, who at first resists Gilgamesh's inquiries. After a failed trial and persuasion from his wife, he tells Gilgamesh of a magical plant which grants eternal life. He acquires the plant, but one night, a serpent eats it, and sheds its skin as it regains youth.

Empty-handed, Gilgamesh returns to Uruk a changed man. He has reconciled with his mortality, understanding that he cannot live forever. Gilgamesh's journey has also humbled him, as he has come to understand some of the hardships his people faced at his hand. Taking in the magnificent sight of achievement that is his city- the closest man can get to immortality - he retakes his position as ruler of Uruk.

Servant Historical Background Part 2

Servant: Lancer (Fate/Zero)
Real Identity: Diarmuid Ua Duibhne

According to Irish mythology, Diarmuid Ua Duibhne chronologically existed in early medieval Ireland between 800-1169. Diarmuid was the son of Donn and foster-son of the Irish god of love, Aenghus. He was also a warrior of the Fianna (small warrior bands) led by Cumhall and later his son Fionn mac Cumhaill.

Donn gave Diarmuid to the god, Aenghus, to raise and he returned the gift when Diarmuid received the “magical love spot”. One night, when he was out hunting along with 3 companions, they took shelter in a small hut owned by a beautiful young woman named Youth. Youth slept with Diarmuid and put a magical love spot on his forehead, which would make him irresistible to women.

That’s when he met Grainne, the intended bride of Fionn mac Cumhaill in their wedding party. Grainne fell in love with him, mainly due to his love spot, and forced him to run off with her. For 16 years the Fianna pursued them until Aenghus made peace for the Fianna and Diarmuid.

After that, Diarmuid and Grainne lived happily, and had raised 5 children together; however, the story wouldn’t have a happy end. Donn has killed his brother at birth because he believed that Aenghus’ steward, Roc, was the real father. However, Roc revived the infant as a magic boar destined to kill Diarmuid. When hunting one day with Fionn mac Cumhaill, Diarmuid came face to face with the magic boar. His hit had no impact on the boar and he was hit. Fionn refused to treat him and by the time the other hunters arrived on the scene, it was already too late. Aenghus took care of the corpse and breathed a new soul into it so they could chat whenever he wanted.

P.S. Remember this is mythology so it's possible that more than one version of the story exists.

Servant Historical Background Fate Series

Servant: Saber (Fate/Stay Night, Fate/Zero)
Real Identity: King Arthur Pendragon

*One of the hardest things regarding Arthur Pendragon are the numerous historical variations that have been put in place. For that reason, the information in this post will follow popular legend.*

King Arthur was born in the late 5th Century to King Uther Pendragon of Britain and Igraine, the wife of the Duke of Cornwall. As told in legend, he was left in the care of the magician Merlin, who advised that Arthur be raised in secret.

When Uther died, there was great turmoil over the successor to the throne. At this, Merlin sealed a sword into a stone. This sword had inscribed on it, "Whoso pulleth out this sword of this stone is the rightwise born king of all England." Arthur, the rightborn heir to the British throne, eventually pulled this sword from the stone, and became King of England.

By the time he assumed the throne, Britain had been thrown into chaos; the fall of the Roman Empire forced the island into independence, and Britain had become the target of the Saxons, who hailed from modern-day Germany. Foreseeing the complete conquest of Britain by the Saxons, Arthur assembled the Knights and set up his main base at Camelot. He and his most trusted advisers held conferences at the famous Round Table, situated within the castle of Camelot.

During one of his expeditions, Arthur had been sent out by Merlin, which led to him meeting the Lady of the Lake. As a result of this meeting, Arthur acquired the legendary sword Excalibur, with which he is credited to defeating many foes.

Ultimately, Arthur and his Knights managed to fight back the Saxons and restore peace to Britain. This was short lived, however, as the Knights of Camelot turned on each other, igniting a civil war. In the final battle at Camlann, Arthur and Mordred, Arthur's nephew and the one to betray him, were mortally wounded. After the battle, it is said that Arthur's body was set on a boat and set adrift down to the isle of Avalon. To this day, his body has never been found.
